I Pledge Allegiance [guest post by Hannah]

There's a song I love by Britt Nicole [Ready or Not (ft. Lecrae)] that has a lyric that sends home--

"I pledge allegiance to being somebody real."

Think about that for a moment. Real. It says to be real. Without real there would be fake.

First let's define fake:
"[Webster's definition] Fake // one that is not what it is conveyed to be.
a: a worthless imitation passed off as genuine. "

The first part of that definition is: one that is not what it is conveyed to be. One that is different on the inside than what it looks like on the outside.

But what really hit me was the first definition of it: a worthless imitation that is passed off as genuine. A fake copy that isn't true, that's worth nothing.

So many times people's lives are fake. They're different on the inside than what they look like on the outside. Think about that girl or boy at school that is always trying to impress, and is in the "popular" crowd. Do you think their lives are really that simple and easy? It's just makeup over the scars in their hearts, just a fake representation of their true longings inside. Think about that neighbor that always acts like everything is perfect and that they don't need any help.

Fake lives create bound hearts. And a bound heart stays bound until Jesus comes to unbind it. But even sometimes Christians bind themselves up with a fake personality and a fake life. They go to church, get filled up with God, then all during the week they're a different person on the outside.

That's when we get back to that song lyric. We defined fake, now let's define real.

"[Webster again] Real // a: not artificial, fraudulent, or illusory : genuine"

Not artificial. Not fake. Not a fraud or an illusion. Genuine. True.

When you're real, you're not hiding your true self in a cave. You're going out into the world without a fake smile. You're being your true self. You're letting God shine through you instead of covering Him up with a fake other person. You're genuine. You're not the worthless imitation.

Think about your own life. Are you acting real or fake? Is the person shown on the outside the same person as the inside? Are you living the life God put in you or something else that may seem "'better" to you or to others?

"I pledge allegiance to being somebody real."

I pledge allegiance to be my true self and not cover up the brightness and life God created inside of me. I pledge allegiance to not act as if the true me isn't worth it. I pledge allegiance to not live a fake life. I pledge allegiance to being myself and not the someone else I act like.

Do you?

  3. Hannah, I have to tell you this is such a fabulous post!! I love the song and the message. So many times I see people being fake and I often feel like the only one why tries to be authentic. I often get cast down because nobody else seems to be real, but don't get me wrong- I often am fake with certain aspects of my life as well.

Thank you for this post and reminding me that I should be real no matter what. God created me just who I am and He wants me to be who He made me to be. I don't have to be fake and hide who I am. God knows us all inside and out and He still loves all of us, so why should we be afraid of what others think? :) Great post Hannah! I LOVED it!!!

    1. You're not alone, Hannah....I can guarantee that almost every girl today struggles with believing in theirselves and with wanting to not be themselves so they can fit in. But you can remember that there is a true you that's just waiting to see the world--no matter what people think, the true heart that God created in you is beautiful and amazing! Everyone has a unique heart and personality created by God, so don't be afraid to be yourself and to show it to the world. You CAN be real! And no matter if you aren't as pretty as that other girl next door, or aren't in the popular crowd, you're still loved and cherished by God! And that's all anyone needs!
